Why Tell?

There are a few reasons we’re not sticking to the tradition of keeping the pregnancy a secret until the end of the first trimester. If something were to happen, I would want to talk about it, to feel it out, with friends. So no need to keep them in the dark. Also, L thinks that tradition lays an implicit blame on the woman, and I agree. If the bean doesn’t take – which the OB said was unlikely – then it is through no fault of my wife, who keeps herself healthy. The element of secrecy brings with it a negative emotional charge, whereas being honest and factual feels right. I want to talk about the pregnancy, to spread the good news, to ask our family and friends for their warmth and support. This is the kind of openness I want to have as a family too.
